Life In The Factory
What comes to mind when you think of a factory
worker? Factory workers worked 73 hours per week. Fast day, Thanksgiving day,
Fourth of July, and Christmas day are the only days they were off. In the
factory there was looms like devices for making fabric by weaving yarn or
thread. The devices in the factory sometimes injured the workers. The
atmosphere in the rooms had cotton filament and dust which is harmful to the
lungs and the windows were never up because the thread didn't work good when
the wind blew so the workers were working in heat. Working in Lowell Mills
factory gave women independence and girl
friendship. They worked long hours for low pay, with work and a noisy area made
hard working conditions. Bad health is the shortness of time allowed for meals
and the question of how long employment. Because of competition from textile
factories and working conditions becaming worst and pay declined for women by
1830s caused many women to leave the factory system.
