When Spain gave up the Louisiana Territory to France, they cut off U.S. access to New Orleans. as
President, Thomas Jefferson wanted to buy New Orleans from France and at first
they didn't accept his offers but in 1803 Bonaparte was preparing to attack Britain
and failing to control Haiti so he didn't want the Louisiana Territory no
more. Bonaparte was ready to sell
Louisiana Territory for $15 million. Which was about three cents per acre of
land.
I think this event is important because the purchase of land doubled the
size of the United States and because this gave Jefferson power to make
agreements with other nations. It's also important because it gave Americans
other towns to settle.
