Confidential Report,  September 1787

Dear commander,

Under the Articles of Confederation the Congress has the powers to make foreign treaties, declare war, print and borrow money, set up mail delivery systems, make rules for setting up western lands, also they had the power to raise and lead army and navy.     Collect taxes, Make foreign treaties, declare war, print and borrow money, set up mail delivery system, make rules for setting up western lands, raise and lead army and navy, send soldiers and officers to the army and navy, establish courts to settle disputes, and elect or appoint leaders to enfore the law are all strengths of the new government under the Articles of Confederation.  The weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation is the lack to control serious issues like taxes on trade goods and the need for one common currency. People did not react good to this new government. Businessmans business was great but they did not like the violence and they want a stronger government. Farmers felt they need to postpone taxes until things get better because taxes was so high and they couldn't take care of there families and they going to lose there farm and go to prison and if the tax situation don't improve they will cause more attacks.
I think the tax situation will not get better so therefore it will be a lot of violence.

Article Title :   The U.S. Doubles!
Newspaper :  News Time
Reporter :  Greniesha Watts

When Spain gave up the Louisiana Territory to France,  they cut off U.S. access to New Orleans. as President, Thomas Jefferson wanted to buy New Orleans from France and at first they didn't accept his offers but in 1803 Bonaparte was preparing to attack Britain and failing to control Haiti so he didn't want the Louisiana Territory no more.  Bonaparte was ready to sell Louisiana Territory for $15 million. Which was about three cents per acre of land.

I think this event is important because the purchase of land doubled the size of the United States and because this gave Jefferson power to make agreements with other nations. It's also important because it gave Americans other towns to settle.

NEW LAND TIMES

Want a better life? How about cheap land and gold? Then moving west is what i suggest! Try California. The west has many different cultures from the people to value. You may meet African Amercians, Europeans, Native Americans, Asians, and Mexicans. To get to the west you can take the Oregon Trail or the Santa Fe Trail. You can bring wagons or tents like something to protect yourself because you are going to be exposed to wild life and bad weather and bring something to treat your illnesses also bring food, starvation is a problem when moving. Life there can be hard at first with the homebuilding and land cleaning. Water being hard to keep. Barely help from doctors, churches, and schools. Women need to be able to protect they self and they kids. Mens can go away to trade, fish, plant, or hunt. Life isn't easy but if you hope for a better life then move west!

5_06 FRIEND OR FOE, MEXICO REPORT SHEET

Step One: Study these two maps and answer the questions that follow.

1.  Describe events that explain the border differences between these maps. Use information from the maps in your response. Use complete sentences.

Oregon Territory 1846, Mexican Cession 1848, Gadsden Purchase 1853, Disputed Texas Territory 1848, and Lonestar Republic 1845 were the border differences between the maps. Britiain and the U.S. claimed Oregon territory but neither of them wanted war so the president around that time who was James Polk accepted the boundary at the 49th parallel. When Mexico couldn't fight no more and the U.S. and Mexico agreed to the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. When Mexico ceded more than a half-million square miles of land they called the land Mexican Cession.

2.  Besides land, what did the United States gain from expansion? Use information from the maps in your response. Use complete sentences.

Because of the expansion the United States gained coal, oil, and gold.

Step Two: Answer the question below using the framework provided.

People disagree whether the United States should have gone to war against Mexico. Do you think the United States should have declared war? Consider information from the lesson and maps to explain your opinion with at least two reasons.

I, _Greniesha Watts____, believe the United States __Shouldn't have declared war_____________ because__25,000 Mexicans and 12,700 Americans died._____________________________________________________________________________________________. A second reason is conflict over whether to allow slavery in the new areas.______________________________________.

Step Three: Form your counterargument using the framework provided.

Reporter McQuill mentions your opinion will be stronger if you respond well to someone who disagrees with you. Use this framework to challenge the opposite opinion.

Even though some people think that it was good for the U.S. to declared war because U.S. citizens have found great wealth in the areas and Trading with Asian countries would be faster and cost less but the gain of land made conflict over whether to allow slavery in the new areas.____________________________________________________________________________.

Life In The Factory

What comes to mind when you think of a factory worker? Factory workers worked 73 hours per week. Fast day, Thanksgiving day, Fourth of July, and Christmas day are the only days they were off. In the factory there was looms like devices for making fabric by weaving yarn or thread. The devices in the factory sometimes injured the workers. The atmosphere in the rooms had cotton filament and dust which is harmful to the lungs and the windows were never up because the thread didn't work good when the wind blew so the workers were working in heat. Working in Lowell Mills factory  gave women independence and girl friendship. They worked long hours for low pay, with work and a noisy area made hard working conditions. Bad health is the shortness of time allowed for meals and the question of how long employment. Because of competition from textile factories and working conditions becaming worst and pay declined for women by 1830s caused many women to leave the factory system.

Cost Of The Amercian Civil War

1. Number one cost of the American Civil War:  Social

The total wounded and deaths from the union was 634,703 and from confederate was 358,000. When i visualize the picture from the lesson there was people laying down looking dead and it look like they were laid out on a field with a lot of trees on the side. In the lesson Judith wrote her son Samuel who fought for the Union army and the letter basically stated she was worried that something had happen to him because he never wrote back before and the family miss and wanted to see him soon. That's why i ranked social for the number one cost of the American Civil War.

2. Number two cost of the American Civil War:  Economic

The loss of a person abilities and skills of the union was 1,064 and confederate was 767. I visualize a picture from the lesson about the economic effect of the civil war and i seen people property really damaged and a note dated April 27, 1862 basically at the ending of the note it was like people are in the field fighting against their enemy and they young lives, and homes are sacrificed that's why i ranked economic as number two cost of the American Civil War.

3. Number three cost of the American Civil war:  Political

Abraham Lincoln electoral vote was 212 & popular vote was 2,218,388. I visualize a picture from the lesson and Abraham was shaking a person hand and in the background people look like they was running and walking like they had freedom and there was a U.S.A. flag and on the other side of the picture they had a man for sale at the auction with Jefferson Davis shaking a men hand and there was a confederate flag in the back. I read a quote about Abraham Lincoln from Noah Brooks who was a California journalist. This why i ranked political as number three.

Impeachment!!

After the civil war the economy of the south was damaged a lot of homes and cities was destroyed and the former president Abraham Lincoln begin governmental efforts to rebuild the nation with the 1863 proclamation of amnesty and reconstruction before the war was over because he wanted a plan in place to bring order back to the country. Congress set up military control over the south just to maintain order and make sure old slaves got treated fair plus congress passed laws that focused on giving black people the right of being a citizen. The civil right act and the 13th and 14th amendments help gain the rights but President Johnson removed Edwin Stanton was the secretary of the war who worked hard to get freed slaves the right guaranteed by the 13th and 14th amendments and reconstruction acts. I don't think President Johnson understand the constitution and he thought free slaves shouldn't be fed, clothed, educated or sheltered by the U.S. he gave it everything he had to fight against the radical republicans and congress. If you was a slave and you finally got freedom and had laws and amendments to be a citizen and get treated fair then the president just try to change that do you think its fair?
